Prior to the formation of the Asthma Coalition initiative, studies showed that asthma and other upper respiratory infections were the leading causes of children (0-18 years) for admittance to Anson Community Hospital.
One study showed that from August 2000 - May 2001, 120 patients in this age group were treated at the Anson Community Hospital ER for asthma-related symptoms.
The Asthma Coalition Sub-Committee's goal is to "help children affected by asthma to minimize the effects of the disease so they can achieve their full potential in life."
The Healthy Ansonians Task Force has focused on developing a system in Anson County that will standardize treatment protocol among physicians and provide a partnership of health professionals who can provide education to families with asthmatic children. Established objectives are as follows:-
Provide high quality, accessible medical care for asthmatic children.
- Increase the availablility of medical supplies and equipment to providers
- Establish a well-coordinated system of asthma management
- Educate children and their families
- Inspect the home environment for asthma triggers
