A collaboration between the Healthy Ansonians Task Force and Anson County Partnership for Children (Smart Start) improves the health and well-being of children ages 0-5.

TOPS participantsThe Teen Outreach Program (TOP) targets teen pregnancy prevention. Healthy Ansonians chose the Partnership for Children to receive funding through from the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, N.C. Department of Health and Human Services to provide the services offered through TOP. Since 2000, the TOP program has served 89 youths in grades 7-9.

TOP participants meet at First Presbyterian Church in Wadesboro three afternoons per week. They use a research-based best practices curriculum entitled Teen Outreach Program that includes a community service component.

The TIPS (Teen Information and Parenting Services) program encourages Anson County teen parents and parents-to-be to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to ensure that their children and/or future children develop healthy bodies and receive appropriate support for their developmental learning and growth. The program offers monthly parenting meetings, structured home visits, education, transportation, counseling, developmental screenings, and recreational outings for parenting teens and their children. Prevention of second pregnancies is a primary focus of the program.

Child getting hearing testIn 2004, a grant from the Duke Endowment funded a Child Health Initiative. The goal to identify all of the approximately 2,100 children in the 0-5 age group and to create a system of health education, medical services' access, health insurance coverage and case management for the children. The ACPC staff collects data from parents for the Child Find database.

The Child Health Coordinator activity provides health-related education to child care providers and to all children 0-5. The coordinator also provides comprehensive screenings such as vision and hearing, including immunizations. Screenings are conducted from the Mobile Health Screening Clinic.

ACPC also has sponsored a teen pregnancy prevention event called "Walls To Climb" since 1997. An annual day-long camp for children 8-12, the event is held each October in connection with Let's Talk month. Amid games and activities, children are taught good decision-making while boosting self-esteem.
