Crash dummiesTraffic crashes are the leading cause of death by injury in Anson County; injury is the leading cause of death in children.

The Injury Control Sub-Committee focuses on deaths and serious injury associated with homicides, suicides and motor vehicle crashes to reach its objective of reducing the mortality rate to Anson County citizens.

Through collaboration with the Anson County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Anson County became a state-certified Safe Community through the Governor's Highway safety Program. Funds were obtained through grants to provide two traffic safety officers for the county and a Safe Communities Coordinator.

Safe Kids (0-14 years old) targets child safety by establishing a permanent checking station at Anson County Partnership for Children for child passenger seat safety; and provides safety seats for low-income families at a reduced price.

Booze It and Lose It boothSafe Kids also promotes fire and water safety and poison control.

Safe Communities works with local law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of traffic crashes and fatalities; participates in Booze It and Lose It checkpoints; promotes home fire safety; and offers safety tips to senior citizens. It also collaborates with the Anson County District Attorney's office in reducing teenage death or injury due to motor vehicle crashes.

Anson County raised its ranking in the number of auto accident fatalities from #7 in 2000 to #21 in 2003.

In June 2006, Injury Control will help sponsor the Asthma Coalition's Camp Summer Breathe by providing first aid kits for the participants.
