Since a high of 49 cases of syphilis in 1995, the STDs Sub-Committee has seen a decrease: five cases in 2001 and none in 2002. Chlamydia, however, has surpassed cases of gonorrhea, and HIV and AIDS continue to be of concern.
Education is seen as key, and the committee attempts to "educate everyone we can get in front of us." Abstinence and safe sex are stressed to health department clients, and free condoms are provided.
The sub-committee works to place educational articles in the two local newspapers to raise awareness of STDS, HIV and AIDS.
